Meo Carbon Solutions project managers Balamurugan Jayakumar and Julia Ostrowski recently attended this year’s Smart Freight Week, which was organized by the Smart Freight Centre in Amsterdam.

The event brought together more than 500 participants, industry leaders and sustainability experts to discuss advancements in freight transportation and decarbonization efforts.

What were our key takeaways from the event?

Attendees received important updates from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) regarding decarbonization opportunities and challenges facing the automotive industry. SBTi also announced the publication of an initial draft of its revised Corporate Net-Zero Standard, which was released for public consultation.

We also received an update regarding the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS); despite a two-year postponement, participants were encouraged to use this time productively to develop data handling and monitoring systems.

One of our highlights was a panel discussion on “Harmonizing Transport Emission Calculation, Are we there yet?” which revealed that while industry, logistics companies and standard setters agree on the direction forward, implementation remains a work in progress.

The conference also addressed market-based measures in practice, focusing on end-to-end supply chain accounting. Mark Staples presented information on the planned new ISO Standard on book and claim methodologies.
